Delayed Delivery of Some Email: Wednesday, May 22, 2013 11:45 AM – 1:15 PM

A change was made in our email scanning service at 11:45 AM that should only have been made in a test environment.  This caused 50% of incoming messages to be queued for delivery.  The issue was resolved at 1:15 pm and the backlogged queue was cleared at 1:45 pm. We have taken steps to prevent this from happening again.

Chat in Google Docs and Presentations is No Longer Available: May 7, 2013

On May 7, 2013, Google replaced the chat feature within Google Drive with a more capable system based on the Google Chat service that is normally embedded within Gmail. Since Ryerson has disabled the Google Chat service (including Google Talk and Google Voice) for privacy reasons, the change means that chat is no longer available within Google Docs and Presentations. The old chat system is still available in Google Spreadsheets but it will also stop working when Google upgrades it.

At this time we do not plan on enabling Google Chat until Google makes it possible for Ryerson to make privacy the default setting in Chat. We have submitted another request to Google that they allow us to make privacy the default. More information on why Google Chat was disabled at Ryerson is available at:

Google Drive Service disruption: Friday, May 10, 2013 3:00 PM – 3:12 PM

Google Drive  has been experiencing intermittent problems since about 3:00 PM.  Some users have reported that after logging into Google Drive on the web, their files appear to be missing.

Network outage – Thursday, May 9, 2013

Due to a problem with a core network firewall, IT security tried to implement a quick fix.  Unfortunately, that resulted in a network outage for all wired networks on campus.  The connection was reset and network connectivity restored 4 minutes later. The outage lasted from  10:00 to 10:04 AM approximately

my.ryerson service disruption: Monday, May 6, 2013 3:00 AM – 8:00 AM

At approximately 3:00 AM , a synchronization issue between RMS and the my.ryerson.ca portal application caused some users to receive a “access to application suspended” error when connecting to the portal.    Technical support staff resolved the problem at 8:00 AM.

Google Mail disruption: Thursday, May 2 2013 3:02 AM – 3:43 AM

Google Mail (Gmail)  experienced a problem this morning, starting at approximately 3:02 AM and ending at approximately 3:43 AM.  During this period, some users may have experienced 502 errors and latency when accessing email.

Network outage – Jorgenson Hall – Thursday May 2, 2013, 2:35PM – 2:50 PM

Due to a problem within a departmental network, the main network switch in Jorgenson Hall automatically disabled itself  to prevent the problem impacting Ryerson’s core network.

This resulted in a network outage for all of Jorgenson Hall, both wireless and wired.  The connection was reset and network connectivity restored fifteen minutes later at approximately 2:50 PM

We are working with the firewall vendor to resolve the problem and plan to upgrade the firewall firmware at 6 AM Friday April 26, 2013.

Scheduled sharedata service disruption: Friday, April 19, 2013 11:00 PM – 11:10 PM

The disk storage capacity on the CFAPS sharedata server needs to be increased. We expect to add the additional storage without any service disruption, but a 5 minute interruption of the S: drive services may be required.  The change will be carried out tonight, Friday April , 2013 starting at  around 11:00 PM.
