WiFi outage on Tuesday February 10, 2015 1:05 PM

On Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at 1:05 PM, a wireless network controller servicing the AMC, CED, CPF, DMZ, RIC, HEI, IMA, OKF, SBB, SCC, SID and VIC buildings failed which caused a WiFi outage in these buildings. The Wireless Access Points had to be moved to another controller and services resumed at 1:30 PM.

Email Service Disruptions Sat. Feb. 7, 10 AM to 3:30 PM

During preparatory work for the RMail upgrade scheduled to begin February 14 a number of problems occurred and were resolved on Saturday, February 7:

  • There were intermittent problems sending mail using Ryerson’s SMTP service between 10 AM and approximately 2:00 PM
  • Incoming mail was delayed between 10 and 10:20 AM
  • Some mail sent from the RMail Web client bounced (could not be delivered) prior to 11:47 AM
  • Some mail sent to Google Groups bounced back to the sender prior to 3:30 PM.

During these problems no email was lost. Incoming email was delayed and some outgoing email bounced back to the sender without being delivered.

Update 10:35 PM: We have confirmed that the native Mac Email client cannot send mail using Ryerson’s SMTP server. Thunderbird works fine. We are working to resolve this problem.

Update Sunday Feb 8, 1 AM: The problem with native Mac email clients connecting to Ryerson’s SMTP service has been resolved.

Blackboard outage on Saturday February 7, 2015 4 AM to 9:10 AM

On Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 4:00 AM, Blackboard became inaccessible preventing access to online courses. CCS has traced the issue to a problem with the Blackboard database server and we are working to resolve the problem. Updates to follow.

Update 9:38 AM: Blackboard was returned to service at 9:10 AM.

Voice Mail system outage on January 30, 2015 from 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM

On Friday, January 30, 2015, a scheduled upgrade to the voice mail system (Call Pilot) took longer than expected. This caused an extended outage from 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM where users were unable to access their Voice Mail. Services were resumed at 9:00 AM.

WiFi outage in POD & JOR on Thursday January 29, 2015 from 12:35 PM to 12:50 PM

On Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 12:35 PM, a wireless network controller servicing the POD and JOR buildings failed which caused a WiFi outage in these buildings. The Wireless Access Points had to be moved to another controller and services resumed at 12:50 PM.

Network outage for Kerr Hall West 3rd floor on January 28, 2015 from 00 :34 to 9:30 AM

On Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 00:34 AM, a network switch servicing Kerr Hall West’s 3rd floor became unresponsive. This prevented any new network connections in this area. The network switch was rebooted at 9:30 AM, at which time normal services resumed.

Partial RMail Service Disruption: Monday, January 26, 2015, 7:55 PM – 9:17 PM

The RMail Webmail, IMAP and POP services on one of Ryerson’s three RMail servers stopped working at 7:55 PM Monday January 26. The services were restarted and came back online at 9:17 PM.

Partial RMail Service Disruption: Saturday, January 24, 2015, 11:49 AM – 2:19 PM

The IMAP service on one of Ryerson’s three RMail servers stopped working at 11:49 AM Saturday January 24. The service was restarted and came back online at 2:19 PM. The IMAP service is used by Email software such as Thunderbird and Outlook to read mail and by the Rmail Web system at https://mail.ryerson.ca.

WiFi outage on January 16, 2015 from 10:45 AM to 10:50 AM

On Friday, January 16, 2015 at 10:45 AM, a configuration error was made that prevented new connections to the wireless network. This was corrected at 10:50 AM at which time normal services resumed.

my.ryerson Service Slowness : Monday, January 12, 2015, 11:20 AM- 12:00 PM

The my.ryerson servers became unresponsive at approximately 11:20 AM today.  This caused service slowness for users who were attempting to logon to my.ryerson.  We identified the issue to be due to the Blackboard portlet in my.ryerson that lists the online courses and organizations.  Around 12:00 AM,  we disabled the portlet and replaced it with the following message:

A list of your online courses and organizations is currently unavailable.

The response time is back to normal. We’ve found the root cause and are working on a permanent fix.
