Multiple service disruption due to server crash: Saturday, May 14, 2016 16:03 PM – 17:20 PM

One of the physical servers that hosts various virtual machines (VMs) crashed on Saturday, May 14 at approximately 4:03 PM.   The server crash resulted in various service outages, including lab printing services.  The server was rebooted and services were restored around 5:20 PM.  Preliminary investigation indicates that the problem was due to networking issues.    CCS administrators are continuing the investigation.

REB/RIS application service outage: Friday, May 6 2016 4:30PM – Saturday, May 7 2016 5AM

The Research Information System (RIS) and Research Ethics Board (REB) application became unavailable after 4:30 PM on Friday, May 6, 2016 following planned maintenance.   A restart of the application was performed on Saturday, May 7 around 5 AM  to restore services.

www.ryerson.ca outage: Thursday May 5, 2016 3:42 AM – 7:33 AM

The www.ryerson.ca website became unavailable overnight, starting at 3:42 AM.  The services were restarted at 7:33 AM.   Preliminary investigation indicates that the problem was due to application processes that stopped responding.    CCS administrators are continuing the investigation.

Academic lab printing disruption: Friday, April 29, 2016

At approximately 8:50am on Friday, April 29,  academic lab printing started experiencing slowness when downloading a required print  driver at user login time. The issue manifests itself via  a pop-up message indicating that the Windows Printer Installation is Looking for a driver…  If the pop-up is not closed, the driver eventually installs after a few minutes.   If it is closed by the user, the driver download is interrupted and printing will not function afterwards.

Technical staff are investigating the problem and will provide and update once the problem is fixed.

Update – April 29, 4:45pm: The networking group is still investigating the problem.

Update – May 3, 4:30pm: After extensive trouble shooting by technical staff, the root cause of the problem has been narrowed down to an automatic update to the anti-virus software.  The anti-virus software vendor has been engaged and we expect to have a resolution shortly.

Update – May 11:  An update released by the anti-virus software on Friday May 6th resolved the issue.

Internet outage on Friday April 22, 2016 at 1:00 PM

On Friday April 22, 2016 at around 1:00 PM, many sites on the internet became unreachable due to an internet routing problem at a major internet hub in the United States.

The Network engineering team at Ryerson is monitoring the situation and will update once this external problem is resolved.

At around 1:45 PM, services were resumed

Wired network outage on Friday April 22 from 3:15 AM to 7:45 AM

On Friday, April 22, 2016 at 3:15 AM, a firewall protecting all the wired academic and administrative subnets failed. This  prevented these subnets from accessing any network resource. IT-Security moved the traffic to a redundant firewall and services were resumed at 7:45 AM

Lab outage in LIB-386L on Monday April 4, 2016

On Monday April 4, 2016 at 2:30AM, the computers in LIB-386L lost their network connectivity. Connectivity was restored at 11:00 AM after adding a second DHCP server.

Network Engineering staff are troubleshooting the issue.

RU-VPN2 service outage: Friday April 1, 2016 8AM – 8:30AM

RU-VPN2 was not available this morning, Friday, April 1st, from 8AM – 8:30AM due to a failure to start the service following system maintenance.   A configuration change  has been implemented to auto-start the service after a server reboot to avoid similar issues in the future.

Ryecast video streaming issues: Monday, March 28, 2016

UPDATE – March 29, 2016

The Ryecast video streaming issue has been fixed.  All videos should now play as expected.  Thanks for your patience

 

Starting Friday, March 25, 2016 Ryecast started showing errors when videos were playing. Temporarily, the homepage was redirected to the Channels page and Ryecast video playing is currently only available when accessing via mobile devices (iOS or Android).

We are investigating the root cause and following up with D2L to help in resolving this issue.
