Network outage at IMA building on Monday, February 23, 2105 from 4:55 PM to 6:40 PM

On Monday, February 23, 2015 at 04:55 PM, a network switch servicing the IMA building failed. This caused a network outage for the offices and classrooms in this building.  The network switch had to be reconfigured and services were resumed at 6:40 PM.

RMail migration incomplete for some users

We have become aware that some users’ mailbox were not fully migrated during the RMail upgrade over the February 14th weekend. This may have impacted around 1,500 users in various degrees. We are contacting the individual users as we work through the issues.

Network outage at Kerr Hall 2nd floor on Wednesday February 18, 2015 at 7:52 AM

On Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at 07:52 AM, a network switch servicing the North/East corner of Kerr Hall 2nd floor failed. This caused a network outage for the offices and classrooms in this area.  The network switch is going to be replaced within few hours. Expected ETA is at 10:00 AM

Phone outage in ENG building on Friday February 13, 2015

On Friday, February 13, 2015 at 3:05 AM, and during a scheduled power outage in POD & LIB buildings, the diesel generator had some technical issues. This caused an outage for a portion of the main phone PBX that serves the ENG building. The vendor was brought on-site and services resumed at 7:30 AM.

Cold Fusion database issue: Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015 5:50AM – 6:35 AM

Due to a misbehaving application, the Cold Fusion database server  exhausted all available disc space, causing the server to become unresponsive.  Services were affected between approximately 5:50 AM – 6:35 AM, today, February 12, 2015.  The Cold Fusion applications affected included the following systems:

  • runner.ryerson.ca
  • ccs.cf.ryerson.ca
  • hr.cf.ryerson.ca
  • ss.cf.ryerson.ca
  • alfresco.cf.ryerson.ca

We are investigating the root cause of the problem.

Relay Email Service Disruption Sat. Feb. 7, 10:00 AM – Mon. Feb 9, 3:30 PM

During preparatory work for the RMail upgrade scheduled to begin February 14 a problem occurred with the email relay server. The email relay server is only used by applications to send emails.  Any email messages with external recipients (non @ryerson.ca email accounts) sent through the email relay server were bounced during this time period. The issue was fixed at 3:30 PM on Monday Feb. 9. We are notifying the owners of the applications that were affected.

WiFi outage on Tuesday February 10, 2015 1:05 PM

On Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at 1:05 PM, a wireless network controller servicing the AMC, CED, CPF, DMZ, RIC, HEI, IMA, OKF, SBB, SCC, SID and VIC buildings failed which caused a WiFi outage in these buildings. The Wireless Access Points had to be moved to another controller and services resumed at 1:30 PM.

Email Service Disruptions Sat. Feb. 7, 10 AM to 3:30 PM

During preparatory work for the RMail upgrade scheduled to begin February 14 a number of problems occurred and were resolved on Saturday, February 7:

  • There were intermittent problems sending mail using Ryerson’s SMTP service between 10 AM and approximately 2:00 PM
  • Incoming mail was delayed between 10 and 10:20 AM
  • Some mail sent from the RMail Web client bounced (could not be delivered) prior to 11:47 AM
  • Some mail sent to Google Groups bounced back to the sender prior to 3:30 PM.

During these problems no email was lost. Incoming email was delayed and some outgoing email bounced back to the sender without being delivered.

Update 10:35 PM: We have confirmed that the native Mac Email client cannot send mail using Ryerson’s SMTP server. Thunderbird works fine. We are working to resolve this problem.

Update Sunday Feb 8, 1 AM: The problem with native Mac email clients connecting to Ryerson’s SMTP service has been resolved.

Blackboard outage on Saturday February 7, 2015 4 AM to 9:10 AM

On Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 4:00 AM, Blackboard became inaccessible preventing access to online courses. CCS has traced the issue to a problem with the Blackboard database server and we are working to resolve the problem. Updates to follow.

Update 9:38 AM: Blackboard was returned to service at 9:10 AM.

Voice Mail system outage on January 30, 2015 from 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM

On Friday, January 30, 2015, a scheduled upgrade to the voice mail system (Call Pilot) took longer than expected. This caused an extended outage from 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM where users were unable to access their Voice Mail. Services were resumed at 9:00 AM.
