Network outage on Friday, December 8, 2016 at 9:18 AM

On Friday, December 9, 2016, at 9:18 AM, an increased multicast network traffic caused random 5 to 7 minutes network outage for some buildings on campus such as CE , EPH and CCS area.  The Network Services team is investigating the root cause.

Network outage in MAC building on Friday November 25, 2016 at 11:30 AM

On Friday, November 25, 2016, at 11:30 AM, CCS received alerts about a network outage (wired and wireless) in the MAC building.  The Network Services team is investigating the issue.

Upadate:

At 11:45 PM an adjustment was made to a  network switch  and services resumed

Slow Internet access on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at 12:25 PM

On Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at 12:25 PM CCS noticed slowness in accessing the Internet.  The Network Services team is investigating the issue.

Update November 24, 2016:

The Internet access problems on November 23, 2016 was the result of a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. DDoS network traffic is designed to stress networks and servers to the point that they become unavailable. In response, CCS began to aggressively filter network traffic but found that the attacker(s) changed their tactics several times in response.

During the initial stage of the attack people attempting to access the Internet from on campus had difficulty doing so or found access extremely slow. However, anyone off campus was still able to connect to Ryerson’s core services such as the my.ryerson.ca portal.

As Ryerson began aggressively filtering network traffic, a small number of people were no longer able to access Ryerson from off campus.

The attack subsided enough that by approximately 7 PM on November 23 network services were largely restored.

CCS is analysing the attack and is working to improve our network’s resilience.

Update November 25, 2016:

Computing and Communications Services (CCS) has added an additional firewall at Ryerson’s gateway to the Internet. Our goal is to increase our capacity to handle and control larger volumes of network traffic. This should help us better manage distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks in the future. This change supplements the earlier addition of a DDoS filtering appliance.

The blog.ryerson.ca server became unresponsive on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016 at 6:40 PM with a database error. The server was restarted and returned to service by 7:51 PM. We are investigating the root cause.

On Friday, November 18, 2016, at 11:00 PM, CCS received alerts that the east side of the campus is experiencing wired and wireless network outage, including podium desktops.  The Network Services team is investigating the issue.

Cold Fusion instance for Student Services outage: 11 AM on Monday, Oct. 31, 2016 to 5 PM on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2016

The applications hosted on the Student Services Cold Fusion instance (ss.cf.ryerson.ca), such as Athletics, Bookstore, CESAR Elections and TTC,  were either partially or completely unavailable between approximately 11 AM on Monday, Oct. 31, 2016 and  5 PM on  Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2016.  The issue has been isolated to one application, which has been taken offline. The rest of the applications were fully brought back online.  We continue to investigate the root cause.

Jira, Confluence and IM/Spark outage: Wed., Nov. 2 2016 7:47 AM – 9:48 AM


Jira, Confluence and IM/Spark (the instant message service) were not available from 7:47 Am to 9:48 Am today due to a database server partition issue. The issue has been fixed and the services have returned to normal. We are looking into ways to prevent this from happening again.

Student printing problem: Friday, Oct. 28, 2016 9:40 AM

Printing to CCS managed lab printers, including those in the Library Commons (LIB272), TRS and KHW71 is currently not working.   The problem was reported around 9:40 AM and it is being actively investigated.   We will provide an update shortly.

UPDATE:  The printing issue was resolved around 10:40 AM.
