At 4:45 pm, Thursday, October 28, the device that prioritizes network traffic coming in to Ryerson from the Internet failed and could not be repaired. Since that time peer-to-peer and file downloading traffic has consumed a larger-than-normal amount of Ryerson’s Internet bandwidth. As a result some people attempting to access Internet sites have experienced delays and time-outs.
A replacement traffic shaping unit was received on Monday, November 1 but the vendor did not supply a system with the same configuration as the previous unit. CCS network staff are working to setup the new unit but do not expect it will be shaping all network traffic before Friday, November 12.
In the mean time, if you use peer-to-peer or file downloading services while on campus, please consider reducing, or even eliminating, using them until after November 12. Reduced usage will help reduce the impact of the current problem on other people using the Internet on campus.
We apologize for the inconvenience this is causing.
